Women of water: meet dita

Our first chat for our Women Of Water series is with Dita. Photographer and ocean lover. Dita shares with us the simple yet profound ways a life of love for the ocean has shaped her journey, work and pursuits.

Dita has a way of reminding us of our place here on the planet through her soft yet strong words, and humbly powerful photography.

Here’s the full conversation.

Where did you love for the water begin?

“My love for the water most likely started in my mom’s womb, hehe. But my love for the ocean became most evident when I began learning to surf and realised that, although I come from a landlocked country and adore the mountains, my whole being needs to stay close to saltwater.”

How has the ocean shaped your life to where you are today?

“I’d say that’s the biggest way the ocean has shaped my life: it showed me where I belong.

Since then, I’ve been exploring coastlines around the world, entering the ocean simply to swim, surf, or dive. It’s the greatest love story of my life. And while I don’t consider myself an environmental activist, I try my best to advocate for healthy, thriving ecosystems, especially our oceans, where the life begins.”

Does your relationship with nature affect your work?

“I’m working towards intertwining my love for photography with protecting and safeguarding the oceans and the planet we’re fortunate to call home. Nature is everything to me, as the name of my photography brand probably gives away. It shapes not only the way I photograph, but, most importantly, the way I live. To me, there really is no separation between the two.

And I don’t mean that in a perfectly sustainable, textbook way. I believe that if we want to coexist in harmony with nature, our relationship with it has to start from within. We need to feel it, not just know it.”

What is one thing you have learned from the ocean that you would love to share with others?

“One of the biggest things the ocean has taught me is the changeable nature of everything. We wake up each day feeling a little different, just like the ocean. The water has its phases, much like we do, and neither is inherently good or bad. There is space for every expression ~ whether it’s a wild storm with towering waves or a serenely calm, mirror-like surface.

It’s our response to these phases that matters most. We can learn to ride the waves or let ourselves drown in them. Very often, we have a choice. And when we, or someone else, are struggling;caught in a current, I hope we choose to reach out a hand and pull them towards safety, just as someone else might do for us.

Nature works through reciprocity. Let’s remember that.”
